Reload begins with a high schooler experiencing something called “the Dark Hour.” During this 25th hour each day, streets become filled with coffins and enemies called Shadows, while a towering structure called Tartarus looms over the island.

The Reload naming was conceived as a result of the Persona 3 developers wanting to use another moniker with the letter "R" to convey its status as a definitive edition of Persona 3 as Persona 5 Royal was to Persona 5, feeling as if simply calling it "Persona 3 Remake" was not fitting for the naming conventions of the series. In battle, every combatant has base stats, HP and SP being of utmost importance; when a party member loses all of their HP, they are automatically knocked out of battle, and if the protagonist is knocked out, the game ends (though in the easy difficulty setting, one of 10 special items called Plumes of Dusk can be used to automatically fully revive the party when he is knocked down.
